2026 Brenda Dendy Stroud Scholarship for Visual Arts
Brenda Dendy Stroud Memorial Scholarship
Brenda Dendy Stroud was a talented artist and dedicated educator whose work left a lasting mark on the Detroit community. Born in Washington, D.C., she built her life and career in Detroit, where she taught art in the public school system and inspired countless students.
A graduate of Howard University, Brenda studied under renowned artist Loïs Mailou Jones and further honed her craft in Paris at L’Académie de la Grande Chaumière. She later earned her master’s degree from Pratt Institute. Her work—spanning watercolor, collage, acrylics, and more—has been exhibited in cities including Detroit, Chicago, New York, and Washington, D.C.
In her honor, the Brenda Dendy Stroud Memorial Scholarship was established by her family in partnership with The Miracles Foundation to support and uplift aspiring young artists.
Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must:
Be a graduating senior from a Detroit high school
Plan to attend Howard University or Pratt Institute (acceptance required)
Submit one recommendation letter from an art teacher
Submit two recommendation letters from non-art faculty

The 2026 Leon English Jr. Arts Scholarship
Established in 2022 by The Miracles Foundation, the Leon English Jr. Arts Scholarship honors the life and legacy of a gifted musician by supporting young, aspiring artists in Detroit and surrounding communities.
Honoring a Legacy of Music & Excellence
Leon English Jr. was a talented, classically trained pianist who balanced academic achievement with a deep passion for music. A graduate of Cass Technical High School, he studied Biological-Chemistry while actively participating in choir and band. He further developed his talent at Interlochen Center for the Arts, experiences that helped shape his musical journey.Leon’s love for music spanned genres—from classical to jazz, big band, R&B, and soul. After high school, he toured internationally before returning to Detroit, where he continued performing and recording.
Supporting the Next Generation
Each year, The Miracles Foundation awards this scholarship to two students from Cass Technical High School. Funds help cover the cost of summer music programs, advanced instruction, or competition fees—ensuring young musicians have the opportunity to grow and excel.
